A beautiful tile palette starts with the feeling you want a room to have. Calm and airy, warm and grounded, or expressive and full of contrast: deciding on that mood makes the many material choices much easier to navigate. Rather than choosing every surface independently, think of your floor, walls and finishes as one connected composition.

Begin with the elements that will stay

Look at the finishes you already have: cabinetry, countertops, timber, metalwork and nearby flooring. Choose one as your starting point. A warm wood cabinet may sit comfortably with creamy tile, while a cool stone counter may suggest gray, blue or a crisp white. These are possibilities to explore, rather than rules that every room must follow.

Give each color a clear role

Select a main background color, a supporting tone and, if you want one, a smaller accent. Keeping the largest surfaces quiet can make a patterned backsplash or colored shower wall feel especially intentional. If you prefer an all-neutral palette, vary the texture and tile scale so the room still has depth.

Compare undertones in your own light

Two tiles described as beige can look very different beside one another. Place physical samples next to your other materials, then revisit them in daylight and under your evening lighting. A photograph is useful for remembering a combination, but it cannot replace seeing the surfaces together in the room.

Let grout complete the composition

A grout color close to the tile can create a softer, more continuous surface; a contrasting shade emphasizes the pattern and joints. Compare grout samples before committing, and check the tile manufacturer's recommendations. Keep your final selection to a few combinations that work together, rather than collecting options without a clear direction.
